Book Store Run!

The girls and I ran some errands this morning and I wasn't really planning on going anywhere else, but then I just decided we should make a run to Barnes & Noble. :) It wouldn't be such a big deal, but the nearest one is about 35 - 40 minutes away. Pretty much everything is that far away around here! :(

It was fun though and I found these 2 books:

I love Charles Stanley......I love listening to his sermons on the radio, so I thought this book would be good too. And I read Lysa's "Made to Crave", so I decided to get her other book. I asked the girls when I got it if I had messed them up yet. LOL! They said not yet. :D

I actually wanted to get Francis Chan's new book and Andy Stanley's new book.....both of them came out this month, but I couldn't find either one at the store. :( The girls all found some great books to read too. Lily found a 3D book that came with 3D glasses, with all kinds of puppies inside, and she was really enjoying it on the car ride home.

We stopped by Starbucks inside the book store and I decided to let the girls get a smoothie. They were okay, but after a few sips they all decided they didn't really like them. :( That was an expensive way to find out, but at least now they know!

Kaylee's Book and Other Updates!

Kaylee got her book today that her class published! It was so awesome to see it and see her drawing on the cover, with her name! I'm so proud of her!! It was such a nice, full-color, hardback book too! I just realized I should have take a picture of her drawing inside too. She drew another one that was for "wet behind the ears".

Her teacher also saved this school newspaper clipping for her. They recently got to meet the author, Kate Klise, and Kaylee's picture with her was in the paper. Neat! I know it's not that good of a picture, but I didn't feel like getting my good camera out.
She came home with some more carrots today that she grew in their garden at school. One was huge! Since she missed the class book party on Friday, due to having strep throat, we went out for ice cream after school to have a celebration of our own. :) Thanks too, to everyone who prayed for her......she never really felt that bad at all and I'm so thankful for that!

So, at 10pm, I realized Madison had forgotten to print her science project out that is due tomorrow. She had to make a brochure using microsoft publisher. Well, I went to tell her to come downstairs and print it and wouldn't you know that my printer ran out of ink right in the middle of printing. Ugh! Daddy to the rescue.........he ran up to work and got it printed out for us.

I've been organizing and cleaning today, like wiping the baseboards and deep cleaning type cleaning. Yuck! I don't really plan to do any more deep cleaning to this house ever again after this week. Seriously! I'm ready to move, can you tell?! Let me tell you though, I was skeptical, but that magic eraser is a miracle sponge! Ha! I couldn't believe it wiped the crayon marks that have been on the girls' walls for years right off! I should have listened and tried it sooner! I was excited it took the crayon off their toy box shelves too. It didn't work on their desks though.

A little house update: the interior walls are done. They're working on the trim right now and we're getting them to build drawers and shelves in each of the closets and pantry. They also installed all the interior doors, but I haven't been by to see them yet. Once they're done with all the trim work, then the painters will do their thing. We should get the kitchen cabinets next week and Morgan can also work on putting all the light fixtures/ceiling fans up. Then once the cabinets are in, we'll just need counter tops, flooring, appliances, and sink fixtures installed and we'll be pretty much done!

I have some exciting news to share, but that deserves its own separate post, so I'll be back tomorrow for that!

A Carrot!

Kaylee has been telling me about her carrots she planted in their garden they planted at school for awhile now. Today, I picked her up from band practice and she had something green in her hand and I was like, "What is that Kaylee? A weed?" LOL!! Then she showed me the carrot part. :D
That's one good lookin' carrot!
She said it was yummy too!

In other news, the beautiful front door I picked out ended up being $2100 when Morgan went to order it. Ha!! Needless to say, that wasn't in the budget, so I gotta find a more reasonable one!
I drove by after school today and they had half the shingles on the roof already! Awesome!

We missed church again yesterday. I did watch Lifechurch.tv's online sermon today. It was about not comparing yourself to others. It was a great one and I'll write what I learned on it later. I've been a little overwhelmed lately, thinking about everything I need to do around here to get ready to move, on top of my normal stuff. I somehow got myself started on reading about 5 different books at once too and I think I'm just going to have to allow myself to set them aside for awhile. And as for my business, it may just have to take a back seat too. I hate that, but family comes first and that's just where my priorities have to be right now. I'll still be working on it, but it may be a few months before I'm able to launch.

Obedience is Not Always Radical!

I ran across a blog today, actually a vlog, from Pastor Steven Furtick. Actually, I happened upon his wife's blog and her name sounded familiar and I remembered that her husband was a part of our One Prayer series. Anyhow, his vlog today was entitled, "You're Not Francis Chan" and it spoke to me and I found myself saying, "AMEN!" because it's something I've been thinking about for a long time.

You all know I was and am such a fan of Francis Chan and his books. If you haven't read "Crazy Love", it's all about living the gospel and living radically for Christ. It's about not being a lukewarm Christian. It's about not being comfortable inside our church walls. I didn't know this, but evidently Francis left his church he was pastoring in order to live radically, take up his cross, and he sold his house and moved to Asia with his family for a few months. He was being obedient to God.

But, as Pastor Furtick says in his vlog, we are not all called to obedience in that way. We cannot look at Francis Chan's life or read his books and get down on ourselves because we are not doing anything "radical". This has been an issue with me for the whole past year and something God has been helping me to see. I've said before that if I'm going to do something, I want to be the teacher's pet, so to speak. I'm going to try my best to be the best and do the best and so when I decided to live this Christian life, I immediately got down on myself because I wasn't doing enough. I read Francis' book and I think the danger in that kind of book is that we begin to think we aren't as good of a Christian as so-in-so, because we aren't doing the same kinds of great things. That is a lie from the enemy and we have to recognize these kinds of lies and move on!

One of my biggest faults is that I see someone who inspires me or someone I admire and I get so excited about what they are doing and I want to do it too! This has been a huge area that God is working with me on and helping me to learn. For instance, I greatly admire the girls at 147 Million Orphans and Ordinary Hero. They inspire me so much! And when I first started reading about their orphan ministries and all of the adoption stories out there, my natural reaction was to want to adopt or want to start an orphan ministry. It's something I'm passionate about, for obvious personal reasons. However, if I am being honest, God is not calling me to do that right now.

Sometimes, God calls us to be faithful by staying right where we are. It's not always about saving the world or doing "great" things. Sometimes, obedience is about being the best Mom I can be to the girls that God has given me. And as I read Ann Voskamp's book, I am learning that life is about being thankful for the everyday moments.

Y'all know I LOVE me a good Christian book. I crave them! But, I do believe there can be a danger in reading books like "Crazy Love", "Radical" by David Platt, and "The Hole in Our Gospel" by Rich Stearns. They all chronical what the calling by God was on their lives. That does not mean that we are not being obedient just because our own lives are different. One of the hardest series we did at church on Morgan and I both was the discipleship series, because both of us were just hearing, "You must take up your cross and leave everything if you want to be a disciple and follow Jesus." And Morgan's like, I'm sorry, but I am not willing to do that. I am not willing to be a disciple and leave my job and my responsibilities. And I'm thinking, well how in the world am I going to justify leaving my girls to go half-way around the world on mission trips?!!

Do you see what I'm saying? It is hard for us, as new Christians, to understand what that means. Obviously, God gave us this family for a reason. For us, being disciples might simply mean teaching our girls to follow Jesus. My calling might be to stay right where I am, being the best Mom I can be, and sharing what I learn along the way on my blog. It's a simple life, not very out-there or radical. No one is going to do a blog post on my life and the great things I am doing. But, that is not what's important.

I think about my own Mom. She was one of the greatest influences of my life on what it means to love. My Mom was not perfect and in her later years, she was not in church. But, I would consider her one of the Godliest women I've ever known. She left a legacy behind that was filled with stories of what God had done in her life. She did not leave everything behind to go serve the Lord......she served the Lord daily right where she was and she loved. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind where she is right now, because she loved Jesus more than anything in this world. She suffered so much in this life and she never stopped praising Him.

So, I just felt like I wanted to share that. If you have time, click over to the link from Pastor Furtick's vlog. It's really something that I think us stay-at-home Moms really need to hear. Let's all move past the idea that we are "just" a Mom. I truly believe the Lord has been speaking to my heart so much lately about being content where I am. To humbly serve Him even if it means that no one will ever see. We are not "just a" anything when we serve the Lord!

P.S. They are pouring our foundation today. :D

Laughing Until You Cry!

Tonight, Morgan and I were watching a show and it had a funny part and Morgan started laughing so hard, which made me laugh so hard that I was literally crying! :D And then, I was adding "rolaids" to my iphone notes, which I was using to write my shopping list and it did the auto-correct feature and thought I was trying to write "Yolanda"........that had me laughing so hard that it took me about 5 minutes before I could even tell Morgan what it said.

Don't you just love laughing so hard that you cry?!! And the funniest thing is that it was not really funny at all. LOL!! It was one of those "you had to be there and be Kristin" to find it funny. Haha!

Anyhoo.........I felt like I was productive today because I paid my business taxes and canceled my sales tax permit. This week, I need to get my new DBA, sales tax permit, and post office box. I'm excited to sit down and make my new dolly pattern, but a little scared too. What if it doesn't turn out right or it takes me forever to get it right?! That is the perfectionist in me, my own worst enemy!

I started reading Ann Voskamp's new book tonight. It is really good. You can join in too. The bloom book club has picked it for their newest selection. I downloaded it on my nook. I was so excited that it was available on there! I am also reading "Lies Women Believe" that Kelly is doing over at her blog. I need to catch up on reading it, but it's going to be a good one too. And I'm in the middle of Candace Cameron Bure's new book about fitness from a Christian perspective. I also got Dan Woolley's new book, about being trapped in the Haiti earthquake, from Walmart and started reading it. Looks like my reading for 2011 is getting off to a good start!

Plenty vs. Want

Sunday, the girls and I got lunch and then took some to Morgan out at our new land. He was working out there, cleaning up some more stuff. I took a bunch of pictures, since I took my good camera. The girls had fun playing too.

The water was way far out that day! I realized just how shallow it is for pretty far out. There were lots and lots of seashells, but no way to get down there. It drops off about 5 feet down, so Morgan said he will build us a little ladder after we move :)
The shore isn't so pretty when all the water is out (I guess due to all the winds we've been having). I counted at least 40 tires! Morgan said after we left, he went down there and saw a couple of the insides of a washing machine. LOL! I guess all that stuff washed ashore during Hurricane Ike.
Here's a cute little shack we have on there. We think we'll leave it and fix it up a little. It looks charming and rustic. Maybe the girls can use it for a playhouse or we can fix it for our outside dog to sleep in.
The view from the main road.
Here's the house next door that we almost bought!
See how far the water had blown out?! If you look ever further, you can see the birds just walking around in the water. It's shallow quite a ways out.
I posted this on FB yesterday. It cracks me up, with her feet all out like that. LOL! Morgan lowered the tire swing to make it easier for the girls to get on, but Lily was scared and I suggested she sit inside it like a horsey and that seemed to work for her. :D
Morgan is pretty much ready to get the dirt in there so they can put the forms up for the foundation to be poured. Last time when we built this house, it only took about a month from the time the foundation was poured, until the house was framed and the roof was on. So, hopefully it won't be long before we start seeing some real progress!

In other news, I'm almost finished reading "Under the Overpass" by Mike Yankoski. Stephanie reviewed it and it sounded really good, so I downloaded it to my Nook. It's been really thought-provoking and eye-opening. It's the story of a Christian college student who was at church one day and he felt the Lord calling him to truly depend on His provision for the simplest of needs by living on the streets for 5 months in different US cities. It really makes you look at homelessness in a different way. It has really gotten me to thinking about the simple things I could do to offer hope in Jesus' name to the homeless people that I am always seeing around my town. He talks about how there were so few people who would actually offer them a meal, etc. And sadly, he chronicles so many "church" people who turned them away because they had more important church business to attend to. Unbelievable! When "the church" is too busy doing "church" things, instead of loving God's people, then they aren't much of a church, are they?!

Yes, I suppose I am naive in my thinking. I know tons of people beg for money so they can get their next "fix". But, it bothers me when I hear Christians complaining about the man on the corner who has been out there for years begging. What do they expect him to do? He most likely stinks to high heaven and looks a fright (at least that's what the author describes happened to him!). How's he going to get a job? According to the author, they would sometimes stand in line all day long at the shelter, only to be turned away at the end of the day due to it being full capacity. When we judge the homeless and how they may use the couple of dollars we spare, we are assuming that we are better than them because "we have our act together." I don't know about you, but I don't remember the bible saying that Jesus loves those who have a job and a home more than those who stand out on the corner wondering where their next meal might come from, hoping it won't have to be dug out of the trash. I do remember it saying that whatever we do for the least of these, we do for HIM. This book has just really challenged me not to assume anything and not to pretend that I am better, and that I must look for ways daily to serve others in Jesus' name. So far, I realize I have done very little, pretty much nothing. My faith is nothing; my knowledge is nothing; the challenge I've felt from this book is nothing, if I don't put it into action. I remember reading "Same Kind of Different as Me" and in it, Denver, who used to be homeless, says for us to look at what that money says that we give away. It says, "In God we Trust". When we give in God's name, we should not worry about what they will do with that money. We just have to do our part and God will do His.

I was looking at a Houston shelter's website and they gave a great suggestion of what you can hand out to the homeless, instead of money. They explained how this is very safe too. The director puts together bags filled with toiletries, band-aids, toilet paper, maybe some non-perishable snacks and food, and a bottle of water. When he sees someone in need, he gives them one of these. How simple would it be to have those handy in your car?! I am always hesitant to hand out money to the man I see all the time on the Interstate on my way to dance, because I have the girls with me. But, how easy would it be to roll down the window and hand him something like that? Oh, and they suggested putting a handwritten note of encouragement in there too. I love this idea and I'm definitely going to do it.

Anyhow, I was just thinking about how this post contrasts so much. I start out talking about my new home we're about to build and then end up advocating for the homeless. Obviously, I know nothing about what it means to trust God for my basic survival. But, I love to share what I'm learning and what God is stirring in my heart. I pray that He will use me for the plans that He has. I don't want to be someone who talks the talk, but doesn't DO anything!

I Interrupt this Blog...........

........for an exciting announcement!!!!!

I am just SO excited right now because I am reading the greatest book!! I don't even remember how I stumbled across it, but I know it must have been a God thing. I've been feeling sorry for myself all week due to some issues that I'm not sure will ever be resolved. BUT, I don't even care about that right now because I know that God is working!

I found this book called "Chazown" by Craig Groeschel. I just started reading it yesterday, but it has a whole website devoted to what the book talks about. The whole idea of the book is that God has a vision/plan/purpose for all of our lives, the specific reason we were created, and if we look at our experiences, core values, and spiritual gifts and how those three things intersect, we can easily find out what the vision for our life should be. The idea is that we shouldn't just stumble through life meaninglessly, but we should live our life with purpose, which we can certainly do once we can discern exactly what God's purpose is for our life.

This is a biblically based book and obviously I could study the word deeply and come up with the same conclusions. Sometimes for me, it just helps to have someone walk me through it, which is what this book does. The word "chazown" means vision. I have been praying A LOT about what God's purpose is for my life. I can feel it in the depths of my soul that God has something more planned for me. I know that if God makes you passionate about things that you never cared one iota about before, then most likely there's a reason for that! I cannot, do not want to, and will not be content until I am fulfilling God's purpose for my life. I sometimes wish I were, because this life is HARD and I haven't even begun yet!

"Everyone ends up somewhere. Few people end up somewhere on purpose." --Craig Groeschel

At the end of my life, I want to be able to say that I already knew how it would end, because I lived it with that specific purpose in mind!

Anyhow, so far I learned that my spiritual gifts are:

discernment, prophesy, craftsmanship/artisan, writing, and evangelism

I'll be back once I figure out what this all means. :D

I Can.

Wow! I haven't posted on here for almost 10 days?!! I'm sure that definitely is some kind of record!

We've been up to all the normal stuff. I can't really say I've been too busy to post. Just the normal stuff. Kaylee got her school pics back. Isn't she precious?
We FINALLY had someone come and look at our house! The first and only showing we've had the whole 4 months we've had it on the market. So, this past Saturday I spent cleaning all day, which means this week has been awesome not having to worry about the house or feeling guilty about it not being clean. All I know about the showing, since it was not our realtor who showed it, is that they told her the woman really loved the house but her husband thought it was way too big. It was their first time to go look though, and she said they didn't say anything about the price being too high or anything like that, so I think that was some good positive feedback for us.

I feel like this week, I have been fighting a heavy battle. Here's my advice: if you don't want to fight a battle, don't tell the Lord that you are saying YES to whatever He asks you to do, even before He tells you what it is. That is what I did and since I said that to Him, I quit my small group, quit tithing, and had it not been for how much my girls LOVE church, I probably would have quit that too. Turns out I'm not too good at fighting these kind of battles, but I am learning and God is using this to show me some very deep, profound things about myself that I didn't even realize I needed to see.

Earlier tonight, I was driving to pick up Madison from dance and I was listening to Kari Jobe's song, "Beautiful" and I got to the part that says:

Here in your presence I am not afraid of brokenness
To wash your feet with humble tears
Oh I would be poured out til nothing's left
And I just wanna wait on you, my God
I just wanna dwell on who You are.

Wow. It hit me so powerfully. I have sang that song a million times and it has never caused such a reaction in me. I pictured myself washing my Lord's feet, serving Him in that way, and it was such a personal and intimate picture to me of loving and worshiping the One who laid down His life for me. He only wants me to give up this illusion of control, to admit that I cannot fix myself anymore, and to trust Him to do it for me.

I came to the realization that the faith I thought I had was really just me trying to will myself to figure out how to fix what was broken in me when my Mom died. Tonight as I continued to drive, I felt Him say to me so gently, "It's okay to break down." After my Mom died, I made a vow that I would never lose control and I would never break down, and I realized today that that is what has caused the anxiety that I have battled for 6 years now. I am deathly afraid that I will lose control, that I will not be able to keep it together. And I finally realized that all those books I've read that I couldn't figure out why I felt this need to read.....it was me looking for the answers of how I was going to fix myself. When all I needed to do was surrender.

It is hard trying to fix yourself. As much as I have grown this past year and a half, I am still learning and I am thankful for this time, because I heard on the radio yesterday something that I know is so true........God allows the bad things in life to happen, because that allows Him to show us His faithfulness. I can already see that this battle that the enemy has been using to try to destroy everything, God is already turning around for His good.

There's just so much in the span of a day that I've learned that my mind is having trouble processing it all. Following Jesus is a journey and sometimes it is so easy to buy into the enemy's lies, which ironically was exactly what our sermon was about on Sunday! I will have to share that soon.

Tonight, I was reading Lisa Whelchel's book that Veronica told me I really needed to read, called "Friendship for Grown-ups" and in the book, she talks about something that Patsy Clairmont told her. One of the first Christian books I ever read was Patsy Clairmont's autobiography about her struggle with agoraphobia, "I Grew up Little". It offered me such hope then, and what she said offers me such hope now:

"The standard we set for ourselves is perfection, and that is never attainable, and then we beat ourselves up when we fall short. You don't have to be perfect. Just be you. God called you to this position, and he knew who you were and what you had to offer that no one else could when he chose you. He believes you can do this. Can you rest in his faith in you?"

I can.

Random Thoughts

When we started building our house that we live in now, it rained for an entire month straight! No kidding, it rained the entire month of June, which is not good when you're in the framing stages of building a house!

Well, now that we've put our house up for sale, it's been raining non-stop. We did get a break for the 4th of July (Yay!), but it rained all last week and all this week so far. First it was Hurricane Alex and now there are some more storms forming in the Gulf, I hear.

I'm not trying to complain, it's just so weird! So, we haven't had one single person come look at our house yet. I know it's only been a week.......I am getting a lesson in patience.

I've been hooked on watching these House Hunters shows late at night and any other home decorating or For Sale shows. I found some fun blogs and other websites too that have really neat decorating ideas for girls' rooms. We never painted the walls in this house (they're all still "simplify beige"), because I think we always knew we would move one day, so the girls are looking forward to having their rooms painted and decorated. If we don't end up moving, then I'll break down and paint their rooms here.

I'm over half-way done with "Breaking Free" by Beth Moore. It is really making me think and I love that! Here's a few really great things to think about that are quotes from her book:

"The enemy's hope for Christians is that we will either be so ineffective we have no testimony, or we'll ruin the one we have." She was talking here about how Satan cannot keep us from salvation, but he tries to break us down so that we will not lead others to Christ.

"God surpasses our dreams when we reach past our personal plans and agendas to grab the hand of Christ and walk the path He has chosen for us. He is obligated to keep us dissatisfied until we come to Him and His plan for complete satisfaction." I love that! I want nothing more than to grab His hand and see where that path leads!!

Our Fun Weekend

We had a great weekend! Friday, we hosted our bible study group here at my house and that was fun.

Saturday, we went to Grandma's house and had hamburgers and went swimming. I didn't even take my camera because I just wanted to have fun with the girls. We got in the pool, then it started pouring down raining! So, we hopped out for awhile until it stopped, and then we got back in. The girls thought that was so funny. Lily is getting more used to the water and she let me take her out in it and help her float around. She even got on one of the floats they have. Zoey and her Daddy came too and we had lots of fun playing with her. She kept wanting me to pick her up, so that she could see this fake bird that my MIL has attached to her hanging ivy plant. Zoey would say "a-bir" and I would say, "Yes, a bird!" She's so adorable!

Saturday night, Morgan and I decided to just stay home and watch the UFC fight together. We were invited to watch it with friends, but we didn't really feel like going anywhere after being gone all day.

Sunday, we went to church (which was a great message!) and then Morgan worked around the house doing some things that needed to be done. The girls and I decided to make a trip to Barnes & Noble, one of our favorite things to do. They each found a book and then Madison found an American Girl magazine (I didn't even know there was such a thing) and Kaylee found a Barbie magazine.

I got 2 books. I'm almost finished with one of them.....it's so good. It's called "Untamed" by Lisa Harper. The cover says "How the wild side of Jesus frees us to live and love with abandon." I also got "Breaking Free" by Beth Moore.

After a week of rain and flooding, it was finally a bright and sunny day on Sunday! The girls had a hard time opening their eyes for a picture, it was so bright. Ha!
Then, last night, we went and watched the fireworks.
We had to wait around for them to start, and Kaylee was playing her DS and Madison was reading a book.
By the time they started, they were totally bored and I was taking a video of the fireworks and Morgan says, "We aren't going to come next year if y'all don't even want to watch them." And I started laughing, because we say that every year. I think I have the only kids who are not amazed in the least by fireworks. I think I love them more than they do! LOL!! Oh well! It was still a really fun weekend!

Today, we are just being lazy and staying around the house. Morgan is off and is mowing and stuff like that. I woke up this morning around 8:30 and I kept wondering why he hadn't left for work yet, and then I remembered that he had the day off. Ha! The good news is that if we don't sell our house, all of these little things that we've been needing to take care of (like touching up paint, etc) are pretty much all done now! And I learned that I CAN keep this house clean......it just takes a lot of effort!

Books, Clothes, and Other Randomness!

"Every one of us must make a very important decision and this decision will have huge implications on how we process life. We must decide if we are going to put our faith in what God does or in who God is." --Pete Wilson, "Plan B"

I came across this quote in the book I'm reading last night and I thought it was definitely something to think about! When we are tempted to lose faith, because things did not turn out how we wanted them to, we must remember who God is! Instead of basing our faith on his activity, we must base it on His identity. He is always faithful, all-knowing, all-powerful, the Creator of the universe........His ways and reasons are so much higher and so much deeper than our minds can possibly ever comprehend and we must trust Him!!

I have read some really amazing books this year so far! When I read books that get me to think about things differently, I get really excited! That's why I mostly read non-fiction Christian books. I always learn something from them and I love that! I've read 19 books so far this year. Some of the really good ones I've read recently are:

"The Hole in Our Gospel" by Rich Stearns
"One in a Million" by Priscilla Shirer
"The Me I Want to Be" by John Ortberg
"Radical" by David Platt
"Christian Atheist" by Craig Groeschel
and I'm currently reading
"Plan B" by Pete Wilson

I also have "One Million Arrows" by Julie Ferwerda to read.
Thomas Nelson Publishers also sent me a copy of "I Am Hutterite" by Mary-Ann Kirkby to read and review, so I will be doing that too.

I love to read!!! What do you enjoy doing more than anything in your spare time?

Today, I spent all day cleaning out my spare room upstairs/storage room. It sure was fun going through all of the baby clothes I had kept and seeing what I still had. I just couldn't part with any of them. I also found a box of pictures and things that were my Mom's and it was so neat to see what all was in there. She even had telegrams that my PaPa had sent to my MeMe when he was in the service! So neat! They're so old and brittle now though.

I boxed up 2 totes full of clothes and things and Morgan took them to the pregnancy resource center's new resale shop they just opened, along with a glider rocker and hair bow rack I had. I also bagged up about 7 large trash bags full of things to donate to the drop-off donation box down the road. They were mostly old toys and clothes. And we got rid of several bags of stuff to throw away too. I'm still not done either. How does one family accumulate this much stuff? It makes me truly sad to know that things are that disposable in our house, yet so many children have nothing.

I hope everyone has an awesome Father's Day tomorrow!!! We are going to church, then over to my MIL's house for lunch. Have a great day!!!!

There is No Plan B!

I am reading this book right now and it is awesome!! I will come back when I'm finished and tell you all about it. I initially heard about it at Gwen's blog. Anyways, here is a video on it. I love how he says we are plan A and there is no plan B.

I feel like this is something that God is really trying to get us to see. I am hearing this idea all over lately, it seems. In "Crazy Love", "The Hole in Our Gospel", "Radical", on different blogs, etc. Lauren just posted a quote on her blog about how we should not be asking God why He allows suffering, but rather why do WE allow suffering?!!

I fully believe that God doesn't need a plan B........he just needs us to trust in His plan A and do what He is asking us to do! Trust me........I am preaching to myself on this one!

The Hole in our Gospel

I finished reading "The Hole in our Gospel" by Richard Stearns a few weeks ago and it was such an amazing book. It's one that I want to read over again, just to let it all sink in. What I loved about this book is that it's a true story about a man (the author) who was living the American dream. He was an executive of Lenox, making multi-millions, when a friend called him and suggested that he applied for a position coming up as CEO of World Vision. He thought his friend was crazy. He was a believer, attended church every Sunday, but to give up his salary, move his family, leave his life as he knew it, and travel to third world countries to help the poor? He immediately said no way! But, God had other plans. You see, God does not call us to live the American dream. He calls us to help the needy, orphans, and widows. He calls us to BE the church, not just attend one. I won't give away all the details, but you must read this book because the way God worked to get him to accept that position was AMAZING!!!

Here are some of the important facts/notes I learned (most quoted from the book):

God expects everything of us. Not just an hour on Sunday. Not just a few minutes of our precious time. Everything!!! Living out our faith privately was never meant to be an option. Belief, worship, personal morality, and Christian community is not enough. It's so much more than a private transaction between God and us, or an insurance policy we can tuck away in our drawer, or our ticket to the next life.

God's love was meant to spread, but not through coercion. It is to be demonstrated, not dictated. The whole gospel means much more than the personal salvation of individuals. It means a social revolution.

Career advancement, a growing bank account, our spouses and children...they may be good, but become stumbling blocks when they begin to possess us, when they divide our hearts and compromise our commitment to the Lord. When asked if you are willing to be open to God's will for your life, you may not even realize how controlling they had become until then.

We would much rather believe that the only things needed for our salvation are saying the right words and believing the right things, not living lives that are characterized by Christ's concern for the poor. I thought this was such an interesting way to look at Jesus' words.....the author changes them a bit to show what most of our lives look like:

For I was hungry, while you had all you needed. I was thirsty, but you drank bottled water. I was a stranger, and you wanted me deported. I needed clothes, but you needed more clothes. I was sick, and you pointed out the behaviors that led to my sickness. I was in prison, and you said I was getting what I deserved.

It is not our fault people are poor, but is is our responsibility to do something about it. If we were on an deserted island with 9 others and God gave us all we could ever need, would we hoard it for ourselves or share it with the others? How would they feel if we kept it for ourselves? This is such a great quote that addresses the most asked question about why God allows suffering:

Sometimes I would like to ask God why He allows poverty, suffering, and injustice when He could do something about it.
Well, why don't you ask him?
Because I'm afraid He would ask me the same thing.

Isn't that so powerful?!! God has given us all the resources to potentially solve every single world crisis. It's not that He allows these things, it's just that we are too selfish to use what we have to do what He has commanded us to do! We cannot say that we do not know about the suffering. We cannot claim that we don't have the means to help. We too will one day stand before God and give an accounting. It's a sin of omission, not a sin of commission. A sin of commission would be something like murder or adultery..........things we do that we know are wrong. Sins of omission are things that we know God has commanded us to do, yet we don't do them. They are still sins and one day we all will have to account for why we cared more about our American dream than we cared about those that Jesus commanded us to care for!

I just cannot say enough good things about this book. Reading it will really open your eyes! I'm warning you though.........if you are still trying to live in denial, saying, "well Lord, I didn't know that I was supposed to do that," then you might not want to read this book, because you will have NO excuses after reading it! It is just so thought provoking and is such a great tool for self-evaluation, based on the Bible. Are we really doing what the Gospels command us to do or is there a hole in our Gospel?

James 1:27 says, "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." I ask myself all the time, what is it that God wants me to do? What is my calling? Well, here it is plainly written in the Bible! If we want to do what God our Father accepts as pure religion, we should be looking after those in distress and keep ourselves from being polluted by the world. We cannot judge ourselves based on things of the world, saying well at least I do better than so-in-so. I honestly believe that most of us are living our lives exactly opposite of James 1:27. Myself included, we look after ourselves to make sure we don't become distressed and we have totally become accepting of the things of this world. What do you think?

Scared to Death

Woo hoo! Today, I was finishing up a book and decided to see if the new Beth Moore book was available to download to my Nook yet, and it was! I almost bought it at Walmart the other day, but put it back because it was $20. I was able to get it on my Nook for $9.99. Hooray! It's called "So Long Insecurity". I think this will be my 11th or 12th book to read this year already!

Also, work has already begun on our new church building. Morgan was telling me that the concrete that needed to be knocked out has been done and building materials are getting delivered tomorrow. Awesome!

Okay, on to more serious issues. I have been dealing with something that I need prayers for. In praying about whether or not adoption is God's will for us, I have realized something. I have realized that it is so easy to trust God, when everything is pretty easy, comfortable, and predictable. But, the minute that something major comes up that scares me to death, I have realized that I am not trusting Him in the way that I thought I did.

Here's the deal. I am completely FOR adoption. Morgan is for it. The money doesn't scare me. I know God will provide. The paperwork doesn't scare me. I am a very organized person by nature and love to have a good challenge. The home study is a little intimidating, but I know it will be fine. But that 14+ hour flight?! Scares.me.to.death........

And here's why:

Well, first of all, I have travel anxiety in general, no matter if it's by car or by plane. And there's the loss of patience that I have acquired since Mom died. I have zero patience when it comes to things taking hours. I can't stand being stuck somewhere either. My first reaction is to want to flee, to get some fresh air and I'm good. So, you can already see how being stuck on a 14 hour flight might be distressing. But, that's not even the worst part of it.

The plane could crash. Now, I'm not afraid of dying. If it's the Lord's will for me to go in my mid-30's, then obviously that is the right decision. Here's where the trust issue comes in though. Everyone will say to just trust the Lord to protect and take care of me. If I have faith, He will keep that plane in the air, right? Well, I'm not so sure. I have experienced first-hand that horrible things happen, no matter how much faith you have. It could very well be His will that the plane crash.

So, I trust that His will is always perfect, but I also feel like maybe I will just be in control of this whole situation and just eliminate that risk. I mean, I can't die on the flight if I'm not on it. And this is when I realized that although I say I trust Him, I really still feel like I can somehow be in control. I still have not surrendered my fears so that I can fully trust in Him. I just can't do it. I can't take the risk of leaving my girls without a Mom. As if I really have any control over that at all! I know logically, I'm only alive right now because God chooses for me to be. But, I still cannot take that leap of faith in this area. And I really need prayers for that!

I have looked at this two ways:

Perhaps, we are not supposed to adopt internationally at all. Maybe the travel issues exist because God has a child right here in the US for us.

Or, maybe He wants to get the glory for this when I do make that flight, because let me tell you.......if I do, it will not be from my own strength, that is for sure!

I would love to hear your advice on this!! That's also a big reason why I was so excited that our next series at church is on Fear.....I really don't think that is a coincidence! I just love that this blog allows me to talk about the things that are on my mind too. It really does help just to get my thoughts out there, however jumbled they may be!

Lots of Stuff!

Sometimes I just feel like rambling, so here goes!

1. I made this little onesie for a sweet little boy today.
2. Morgan said he and our Pastor met with the city officials today and they have the okay to move ahead with the demo/remodeling on our new church building. Yay!!

3. Today was a crazy day. I dropped the glass mayo jar in the kitchen. That was not fun to clean up! :( Lily spilled an entire drink in Morgan's chair. And my email decided to crash on me today.......thank goodness Morgan knew how to fix it!

4. I got Lily one of those paddle-ball things in the Target dollar section today. Nothing like getting bonked in the head by a ball while you're waiting in the car line at school. LOL!

5. Are y'all watching Idol this year? They have some really unique and talented people this year. My favorite girl is Hailey Vaughn and my favorite guys are Andrew Garcia and Casey James. Is it just me or does Casey James look just like Brad Pitt from "Legends of the Fall"?

6. I just finished reading "3:16" by Max Lucado. It was a great book too. I loved this one part:
"[Jesus] pounds Do Not Enter signs on every square inch of Satan's gate and tells those hell-bent on entering to do so over His dead body. Even so, some souls insist."

7. I think I'm going to get to keep Miss Zoey this weekend!

Well, that's about all I can think of right now! Hope you're all having a great week so far!!

What Difference Do It Make?

What difference does it make? That is the question we all want to know, right? If I give my $10 here or $20 there, if I give a homeless man a couple of dollars, if I donate a little to a worthy cause, will it actually make a difference??
The enemy spends a lot of time trying to convince us that if we can't give alot, then why bother at all. But, there is SO much evidence to the contrary!! That is why I love the whole Advent Conspiracy idea. If we all just bought a few less gifts at Christmas and sent that money to build fresh water wells in underdeveloped countries, it can change thousands of lives! It IS changing thousands of lives!!! And it's all being done in Jesus' name! Take a look:

Thank You for Conspiring! [AC 2009] from Living Water International on Vimeo.
(If you become a fan of Living Water International on facebook, you will see the updated statuses of all the wells they have completed, where they are, how many people they will serve....you can even see it on the map. It's really neat!)
So, today for my 400th post (amazing, huh?!!), I would like to give away the book, "What Difference Do It Make?" by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. This is the follow-up book that they wrote after "Same Kind of Different As Me" and it has many stories of how people responded to the first book, and what they did to make a difference. I would like to thank Thomas Nelson Publishers for sending me this free copy to give away to you! You can read what I wrote about it here, when I first read it.
Love is such a powerful thing and when it's done in Jesus' name, it is amazing to step back and just watch it in action. Watch it get multiplied, see the ripple effect..........because with Jesus, it's not about the money. It's about what HE can do when we make a choice to love others. It makes a HUGE difference!
To enter for the book, just leave me a comment. One entry per person. I will draw the winner's name on Sunday. Now, go out and love someone! :D

Updates and Other Rambling

I just got word on facebook that Parker is headed home! This is wonderful news, that I'm certain was made possible by everyone's prayers!

In other news, guess what I got in the mail yesterday? A copy of "What Difference Do It Make?", the follow-up book to "Same Kind of Different as Me", straight from Thomas Nelson Publishers...........all because they must have noticed that I have mentioned how much I LOVED the first book a time or ten. LOL! They offered to send it to me to read and review and I said I had already read it and written about it on here, but I would be glad to give away a copy of it, if they wanted to send it to me. How fun is that?! So, look for a giveaway on here in the near future!

Make sure you head over to Amy's blog and leave her a comment on this post. She is donating $1 per comment, up to $200, to the Haiti relief effort. She is celebrating her 200th post by doing this. That's awesome!

We have been doing our small group bible study on Fridays now. It's alot of fun, because we don't have to worry about rushing like we did when it was on a school night. We started a new study by Andy Stanley about creating margin in your life, like not having so much to do that you get stressed out and have no time for anything meaningful. I told everyone that I really think I've gone the opposite way, in that after Mom died, I started to think that if I did too much, life would pass me by too fast, so I decided that I wasn't going to do much of anything at all. Does that make any sense? Probably not, thus I'm working on it! Anyhow, we were sitting at the table eating dinner together, talking, and as our Pastor calls it "doing life together" and it's just almost unbelievable to me that one year ago, I would've never thought that would've been possible! I told them that they're super lucky I haven't brought my camera along for blog purposes. LOL! I don't think they really get the whole blog thing, but that's okay. I think my blog friends probably know me better than anyone ever will in real life, simply because I write what's on my heart and those who talk to me in person will never get that deep into what I feel just by talking to me.

We also had our monthly ladies get-together this past Monday and that was really fun. We ate dinner and then played Taboo, which was hilarious. We drew names to see whose house it would be at each month, and I got February. Since it's going to be at my house, there's no way they're getting out of taking pictures. :D We are trying to get a ladies bible study together too, probably every other week, so I'm looking forward to that.

Our music guy, Mark, is in our small group and he mentioned that we are doing some new songs tomorrow at church. Yay! I can't wait to see which ones we do. I am loving this practical atheist series too. So, I'll be back tomorrow with my weekly "what I learned at church" post.

A Treasure and a Craft Room

Today, I was continuing my organizing and rearranging frenzy and I found the perfect spot for Abigail's drawing that I won from Lynnette's blog. I don't think I mentioned anything about that on here. Lynnette was having a giveaway for those who purchased one of her books, and the prize was this beautiful drawing that Abigail drew in remembrance of her sister Anna, who went home to be with Jesus. This was one of the highlights of my blogging journey thus far. I just cannot tell you how much I will always treasure this drawing.

A few months after I started blogging, I found Lynnette's blog. I ordered her book because at the time, I was desperate for anything that might help me through my own grief. I remember finishing the book and knowing that God had a reason for me reading it. It was only a week after reading it, that I asked everyone to pray for me, and that started in motion a change in my life and heart that has been amazing! What Lynnette's story did for me is that it gave me hope!

So, today I rearranged some things in my living room and ended up with this:
I just love it. I love the meaning behind it. Even the pictures of the girls are the ones that are on my blog....it just ended up that way. This blogging adventure just reminds me that God knows exactly what we need as individuals to grow and learn and move forward in His plans for us, because He knows us each so intimately. I am amazed at how He used blogging to bring this change in me and to give me hope for my future again.

How neat is it that I had this too that I had bought before, and I just moved it over to this wall? This is even the same verse I have on my blog. Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
So, on to my messy craft room! Our office is the first room you see when you walk in the front door. Instead of having a formal dining room, we opted to make this an office. I'm kind of kicking myself now for not having a dining room, but oh well! This is the before/mid-mess picture.
I found this little canvas a while back that says "No matter how many kids a Mom has, she loves each one the best." So true!
My goal for changing up this room was to put a desk for the girls to paint at and do their art/homework. Everything in here, I already had. I have never had curtains in this room before and it made a huge difference. These curtains were some old ones the girls had before.
I moved this desk out of Kaylee's room, since she needed room for her art easel in her room.
I found this little sign, and pretty much all of my signs in this room, at Hobby Lobby. It says "Girls just want to have fun."
Here's my work area. The white dresser and shelf used to be upstairs in the playroom. I get much more use out of them in here.
I found this at the Hallmark store last week. I love it!
Right after I asked everyone to pray for me back in February, and my life began to change, I walked into a local boutique and saw this tile. It was right up front as you walk in and I had never seen religious things in there before. I definitely did not consider it a coincidence.....back then, I was having so many problems with fear and anxiety. Of course, I had to buy it!
It says "Fear not. God is our refuge & our strength."
My favorite thing in this room is my crafty girl art print. It says "Some girls are extra crafty."
That table that has the white cloth on it is my mom's old sewing machine table. It's an ugly dark brown, so I just threw the tablecloth over it. LOL!
So, that's my craft room/office. I'm definitely not a decorator, but I do like to organize and try to make the most out of the things I already have on hand. I really think this new layout will help us to get much better use out of this room.

Now That's Fair!

In my new little church journal, I decided I would keep track of all the books that I read this year. Then, I was just curious to see how many books I had read last year, so I went to my bookshelf and started writing down all the ones I knew I had read. The list came to 21 books!

I just finished Andy Stanley's "Am I Good Enough" and it was another great book. It was short and really great at explaining things. The idea is that alot of people think that Jesus being the only way to Heaven is not fair, but his point was that believing you have to be "a good person" is actually not fair, because who knows what is good enough? Who determines that? What if you are one deed short of being good enough and don't get in? How's that fair? What's fair is that the way to Heaven actually is the exact same for everyone, no matter what you've done, and that is to make Jesus the Lord of your life and repent of your sins. It's clearly stated in the Bible, and a free gift to anyone who accepts it. Now that's fair!

I learned something last night that I did not know before. He said in his book that "when God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, his purpose wasn't to show us how we can be perfect and make it into Heaven. God knew we could never live up to it. He did it so that we could see how bad we really can be. I don't know I'm breaking the speed limit until I see the road sign. The law was given to reveal what real sin looked like."

I had never looked at it like that, but it makes perfect sense. By seeing those laws, that we obviously cannot keep in our sinful nature, we become conscious of our sin. We see that we need a savior.

Those are the kind of things that I love learning about in the books I read! My goal this year is to read the Bible all the way through. I'm just starting at Genesis and I'm going to keep reading until I'm done. I am comforted by the fact that I could study the Bible for the rest of my life, and still not run out of things to learn.

This past week, after finding out that Liberty University has a great online degree program, I got it in my head that maybe I should go back to school. It would be so convenient to be able to earn a degree without having to leave the house! And their degrees have no distinction between students who are residents and students who earn them online. I don't know why I need another degree. I guess I just figured if I'm going to do all this studying and reading anyways, I might as well earn something for it. LOL! They offer associates, bachelors, and masters in religion. I can't go for a masters in religion, since my B.S. is not religion related (it's in sociology/psychology). So, I would have to start over and it's not cheap! I could transfer some of my classes probably to save money, but it would still be alot, especially since I have no idea why I even need another degree. I did see that they have a school called the Willmington Bible College, where people like me (who just want to learn everything about the Bible) can earn a Th.G degree, which is basically a biblical studies diploma, and 45 of the 60 hours can be transferred into their B.S. degree program later on. It's definitely something to think about. I know if it's meant to be, God will make a way.

Update: I decided to do some more research for the online degrees, and I found that I can indeed get a master's degree from Liberty University! I think the B.S. in a religion related field is only required to go into their seminary, but I can get an MA in Human Services with a specialization in something like Christian Ministries, Health and Wellness, or Marriage and Families. This is exciting! It would still cost about $12,000, so I'm going to have to pray hard about that and just see where the Lord leads me. =)

Practical Atheist - Part 2

Wow....today's sermon was on my most favorite subject that I've learned in this past year!
It was awesome and there was one question he shared that almost took my breath away. It was that convicting. Oh, I should mention that I bought myself a notebook just for taking notes at church and it really came in handy today!

Before I get into that though, he told us that today was reason for us to celebrate because it was our one year anniversary of the official launch of our church. Most new churches won't make it that far and we did! Yay!! And I was so excited today when we had to find more chairs because we had double the amount we usually have. God is answering our prayers and I can just feel that big things are around the corner. We are in negotiations for this new lease space too, so please say a little prayer for that. I know that all of you always have such wonderful things to say about what I'm learning at church and about my Pastor.......imagine how wonderful that will be to be able to reach so many more people in our community!

Today's lesson was "I believe in God, but don't want to go overboard." That could've been my mission statement for my whole life, after getting saved and baptized, up until about Feb/Mar of last year! I just didn't get why some people had to go overboard with talking about Jesus and always going to church, etc.

We talked about Revelation 3:14-16 today, when God was speaking to the church of Laodicea. He told them, "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth."

I learned today that Laodicea was much like America. It was a wealthy city. Thirty years prior, it had been leveled by an earthquake, but they rebuilt it with massive stadiums and ornate, elaborate buildings. Kind of like Las Vegas, there was so much to enjoy, but they forgot about God. They had big parties and the influential people would always get their drinks first. If it was a hot drink, they would get them while they were hot. By the time the less important people got their drinks, they were already lukewarm and yucky. So, when God used this example, it would've been something they could relate to.

When God said He wanted to "spit" them out, that comes from the word "emeo" which means to spew, spit, or vomit. This was not an elegant little spit. This is a violent vomiting out, from pure disgust. And all because they were lukewarm Christians.

Most people today are just like the Laodiceans. We believe, but don't want to go crazy. We still want to blend in with society. Jesus is a controversial subject, so we just keep it quiet. We don't want others to see us as one of those "born again" people. We squeeze church into our schedule, taking only the parts of Him that we want. We might wear the shirt, have the bumper sticker, listen to KSBJ (our local Christian radio station), but our actions don't reflect what we say we believe.

So, if you guessed it, my most favorite subject of all is what we talked about:
Being a lukewarm Christian.
This was talked about heavily in the "Crazy Love" book by Francis Chan and our Pastor used some of those points to illustrate what being a lukewarm Christian looks like.

First of all, "lukewarm Christian" really is an oxymoron. You can't be lukewarm and be a follower of Christ. It's not possible. Following Christ is to die to your self. You can't live as if Christ doesn't exist and call yourself a Christian.

So, what does being a lukewarm Christian look like?
  • You crave acceptance from people more than from God. You don't want to be seen as weird or a religious nut. You want people's approval.
  • You rarely share your faith. You don't want to be controversial and talk about Jesus.
  • You do whatever it takes to alleviate your guilt. You do just enough to make that guilt go away.
  • You think about life on earth more than eternity in Heaven. It's all about your job, your house, your image.
  • You guage your morality by comparing yourself to others. You feel better because at least you're not as bad as most people.
  • You want to be saved from the penalty of sin without changing your life. You say "forgive me", but you don't intend to change. You want to be saved, but don't want to have to do anything.
  • You only turn to God when you're in a bind. You use God like He's a tool in your toolbox, something you reach for when you need something fixed, but then you put Him back in there when you're done.
  • You give whenever it doesn't hinder your standard of living. Did you know that a study was done that says lukewarm believers actually give less than nonbelievers?! You give God the leftovers, after everything else has been taken care of.
  • You aren't much different from the rest of the world. You look the same, talk the same, and act the same as nonbelievers.
  • You want the benefits of what Christ did without conforming to who He is. You want the benefits, but you don't want to change anything in your life.

Our Pastor said this is uncomfortable to talk about. Most churches today are packaging Christ and marketing only the good parts. We have to see the truth though. We may have reasons for how we became lukewarm, but regardless of how it happened, God still wants to spit us out of His mouth. There are many places in the world where people are not lukewarm. There are places where saying "I believe" truly means something; places where saying that means you'll be killed! So many here are lukewarm and don't even know it. Many are lukewarm and don't even care. Our Pastor said that all of us are rich. He said if we came to church today in an automobile, we are in the top 3% of the richest on the planet. And the more we have, the more we want, and the less we need God.

In Revelation 3:17, 20, God says, "You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked......Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me."

Our Pastor asked us if it sounded like God considered these lukewarm Christians to already be followers? He is telling them that they do not know Him yet. He's not already in their lives. He needs to be invited. He is saying that if they already knew Him, they couldn't and wouldn't be lukewarm. Lukewarm doesn't exist when you know Him. When you know Him, your life will change. It's not about saying a prayer and then checking that off the list and you're good to go to Heaven. It's a life change. Scripture says nothing about saying a prayer. It's about living for an audience of One.

Once your life changes, you can't contain it. You can't "not" talk about it. You become generous. You become different. You repent because you hate to know that you've wronged God. Your values aren't the same as everyone elses.

And then came the question that just about knocked the breath out of me. It was from a John Piper book, I believe. He said:

If you could have Heaven and all of the wonderful things that Heaven has, could you go there and be happy if Christ was not there?

If so, maybe you don't really know Him. Whoa! Stop and think about that. Do I want to go to Heaven because of all the wonderful things it offers, because I get to be with my loved ones again, or because Christ is there? I about lost it when he said that. I think I just really felt the Lord telling me that it's not about what this life can do for ME. It's about following Him.

Our Pastor said we should ask ourselves: What does my life do to Jesus and what does He see in me?
