The 1950's

Join us on a walk down memory lane! Click on the button below to find out how.
This is one of my absolute favorite pictures of my Mom, Dana Kay, and her Mother, Bennie (my MeMe).

I don't really know the history behind this photo, like who took it or where they were. I only know they were out shopping. I bet it was either in their hometown of Hubbard, Texas or possibly in Waco, which would've been the closest shopping destination. It had to have been in the early 50's, because my Mom was born in '48 and appears to be about 4 here.

But, I just love everything about this photo and that era! I so wish that I was alive in the 1950's. I just love the fashion of that time. I love that when ladies went out, they looked so nice in their beautiful belted dresses. I love the way my Mom is carrying her little purse on her arm. I love the stylish Jackie-O look of that day.

My MeMe looks like a million bucks here in this photo, as well as my Mom, and I guarantee you that she made both of their dresses. They had no money back then, yet she took great pride in the way they dressed. They looked like they were very wealthy, but that couldn't have been further from the truth. I just love and admire that so much!

The kind of outfits my MeMe could make back then would sell today for hundreds of dollars. They were the highest quality that you could ever produce. My Mom could sew just as well as her too. My biggest regret in life is not taking the time to sit down with my Mom and have her teach me to sew.

That reminds me, my sweet husband bought me a serger back in Christmas of 2007 and I have not opened the box yet. Isn't that horrible?! I think it's about time that I forget about how intimidating it is, open it up, and teach myself to sew! What do you think? ;)

Loved the post. LOVED the photo. You're right - it's awesome - it looks like it should be in a magazine!

What a different time that was and I think it would have been fun to be growing up or a grown up then. I know the time frame was a little later, but I always loved The Wonder Years tv show.

Take that serger out. It's cool. I bought one in 2000 when I was sewing all the dresses for my wedding. They are amazing and I haven't used it since. So, if you open your box and learn, I'll get mine out of the basement and relearn!

Thanks for sharing this!

OMGosh, I love this era too! Or should I say generation. I was born, well lets not tell, but all my mothers and grandmothers pictures wore these clothes. Their hair was short and rolled up on the sides.....so classy! The women in those those were classy, sharp, smart, glamarous (sp?), HOT and sexy! The women were just special in those days! I sure miss my grandmother! Wonderful role model!
Thanks for the memories

What an awesome picture!

I learned to sew in Junior High but do you think I remember any of it? My mom sews a lot, so it would probably be a good idea of I asked her to teach me again.

You should bust out that machine of yours and see what you can come up with. You might even be able to ask Stephanie for some pointers or even check out any tutorials that might be available on You Tube. I tried to teach myself to knit on You Tube at the beginning of the year but then I got going on the hats and I just don't have any time right now to learn something new.

It will be fun to see what you end up making! It will be a new adventure!!!

That photo is amazing!!! Wow. Your mom looks just adorable and your MeMe looks fabulous. I love the 1950's too, girl. The dresses, the shoes, the lifestyle--it was all good!

I taught myself to sew recently and I have loved it! I even made my little girl a dress! But I just don't seem to have enough time to sew all the things I have wanted to (sigh). One of these days! It really is fun, Kristin, you should try it!

.. oh and I totally want one of those trailers for Bentley when she gets older. I know she would just love it.

I just wish we had a better area to ride bikes. We live on gravel, so not easy to ride on.. so I go to my parents, but they live in the country and there are SO many hills. I guess I need to look on the bright side and keep telling myself that can only help. HA!

So, when you open your serger tomorrow - just be sure to read the instructions. I was so frustrated because it seemed complicated, but when I actually read the instructions and watched the how to video that came with it - the light bulb went off :o)

Sometimes the tension can be tricky for certain material, but once you get the hang of it - wow! I once made a 'sundress' type thing that was floor length and I didn't sew any hem - I just serged it and LOVED it.

Anyway, post about your serger progress, I'll be checking in on you - haha!

What a beautiful photo and memory, especially that appearances can be deceiving. They are dressed like a million bucks.

My grandma sewed and my mom still does. I, however, am craft-impaired, and nothing will ever change that. So if you learn to sew, my hat is off to you. :-)

Kristin, I have been busy with grandkids for a few weeks. I had missed some of your posts. I had been wondering about the thrift shop thing.

I guess you have decided to not go for it,...but don't think it can't ever happen. You could start your own someday if you really wanted to.

I have a friend that ran one for many years, and when her kids were little she took them with her.

They had back rooms and tv's and a couch, microwave fridge etc. (I'm not saying this is what you should do,...I am just saying there could be a way if it was what you really wanted,.. and kept feeling lead that way.)

I am sorry that you feel like your support group is small or nill. If I was in your area I would be there for ya! (I love to be needed)! Ha!

How about your mom-in-law? Could she be there for ya? Just wondering.

I get the blues sometime,...and yes, somedays I am not up to going to church either,...but keep on going when you can honey, cuz you sound like you are the happiest when you are learning what God teaches ya! ((smile)) And I love it too, when you write about what you are learning.

I KNOW that you could learn how to sew. You are such a smart gal. (You college graduate you!) (:>)

That would be awesome to put your creative ideas into garmets and pillows and curtains and purses, etc. Have you seen some of those wonderful hobo bags and purses that people sew? They get good money for them too,...and the fabric choices are unending.

I love skirts and if I could sew I would make those. They seem like they would be easy with elastic waists.

I don't think I should keep rambling on,...but I just want you to know that YOU are so valuable! You are such a delight,...and I love you,...and can't imagine my life without my Kristin! ((smile))

Hang in there,...God will show you the path to follow. And for the time being, try to find contentment in Him.

Sunday's sermon was on being content. Pastor read the verse that said we should be content with food and clothes,...and we have tons more than that! We are so blessed.

Loved the picture of your mom and your meme. So classic and stylish!

Well, enough for now my girl.
Gotta run.
Love, Linda

P.S. Leaving on a trip tomorrow will be gone for awhile.
