If you would like to join me on a walk down memory lane, please click on the picture above to find out how!
Today, I was going to tell some funny stories about my first couple of dates with my husband, but those will have to wait until next week since my scanner won't let me scan any pictures today!
Lynette's post about her engagement ring today reminded me of a special piece of jewelry that I own, so I went looking around and found several special treasured heirlooms that I would like to share.
My Mom lost the diamond in her original engagement ring. They looked everywhere for it and she could not find it. Eventually, she ended up getting a new wedding ring made, but she always treasured her original set. One day, many years later, my Dad was vacuuming and saw something shiny stuck in the carpet. He bent down, and would you believe that it was the diamond from my Mom's ring!?! After many years of vacuuming, and walking past that spot, it was still there, just waiting to be found. My Mom had that diamond made into a necklace for me, and I can't remember which occasion she gave it to me, but it was a complete surprise and so very special. I will treasure it forever.
Here is a picture of my special necklace.
My Mom loved to write, so almost everything special she gave me, came along with a special hand-written note for me to keep. I went looking, because I'm sure this necklace included a letter, but couldn't find one specific to it. However, when I opened my hope chest, I knew I had to share with you some other special things that my Mom made for me that did come with a special letter!
On Christmas of 1997, when I was 21, my Mom gave me a beautiful peach afghan that she crocheted for me and also some hot pad/potholders. Some of the hot pads I use every day, but these ones I have put up to hand down to my girls one day. In the card she gave me, my Mom wrote, "When I made this there is a lot of love with every stitch. You can use it now or save these things for your hope chest. I hope you like it & these hot pads."
In her letter, she wrote something that I haven't read in years, yet it brought tears to my eyes because it is so beautiful and so true. What I love more than anything, is that even though my Mom is no longer here with me, I am still learning very important lessons from her. She wrote:
"In the not too far off future, you will marry & start a life as a wife & then one day a Mother. Remember, life is so short, so make each day count, for we are here for a short time & we are here to love & be loved."
It's amazing that these are the words she chose to write, and that I am reading them during this time in my life, when I have been struggling with letting go of Mom and learning how to live life again without her. I have no doubt that she wrote these letters to me because she knew that one day I would need them. They are so very treasured. She is absolutely right too. We are here to love one another and to be loved. That is the most important thing in life, and no one ever made me feel more loved than my Mom. I hope that the words I write in my blog will one day be treasured by my girls and that they will know that I loved being their Momma more than anything else in the world!
When I got done taking my pictures for this post, I sat down in my chair to put them on my computer. When I looked up, this is what I saw:
Some of the lyrics to "The Lighthouse":
And I thank God for The Lighthouse
I owe my life to Him
For Jesus is The Lighthouse
And from the rocks I've seen
He has shown a light all around me
That I might clearly see
If it wasn't for The Lighthouse
Tell me where would this ship be.

What sweet treasures! I especially liked the necklace. The five year old me ran off with my mothers engagement ring and lost it on the playground at school. I get so upset at myself because I know that would have been something I would one day treasure!
I am so sorry that you lost your mom. I think it's absolutely wonderful you have such special things from her and those letters to look back on.
Kristin, These are beautiful memories that you shared today.
I am glad that you have these memories of your mom to warm your heart.
You are right,...the colors match the picture! Pretty peach and aqua and blues. Warm and comforting feelings came to me as I read your story and looked at your pictures.
My sister's death is still fresh on my mind and I was relating to how your heart still misses your mom. I am glad you have her special words to speak to you through her letters.
May God give you special blessings today sweet Kristin.
Love, Linda
Yes, wonderful treasures
What a wonderful post! First off, I am so very sorry that you've lost your mom! Although I not lost a parent my heart goes out to you and your struggles :)
That's so neat that your dad found that diamond after all that time! What a blessing!
Your mom sounds like she was an amazing person!

What lovely memories of your mother. I miss my mom everyday and cherish the beautiful things she made with her hands and every word that she wrote. Thank you for sharing this post today. Blessings to you...
What beautiful memories. I love that last picture. The colors are all so pretty together! Thanks so much for sharing.
Precious memories! I also really like that song. Thanks for posting. :)
What a sweet story! Love, love the crocheted things that your Mom made for you. I don't really have a lot of heirloom items passed down to me, so that's one of the things I feel really strongly about doing for my girls. Afghans are also extremely special because they really are a labor of love considering how long they take to complete. I also love the handwritten notes from your mom...those are priceless treasures!
Kristin,
It's so easy to feel your love for your momma through your blogs. My momma writes me wonderful notes to and I keep every one of them. You were very blessed to have a mother who loved you so much and so am I.
I'm sorry that you're still missing her, but I can tell that you are letting God heal your heart and that you are growing through your loss.
Love,
Lynnette
Kristin, how precious is that necklace with a diamond from your mother's original engagement ring?! And just as sweet are the letters and notes your mom wrote for you. I'm so glad that you have them to treasure forever, not everyone is so lucky - I guess we cling to the memories as well. :) Your mom sounds like a very special lady and my heart goes out to you as you miss her and remember her. Thanks for sharing your treasures! :)
I am constantly touched by your sweet love for your mother. She sounds like a truly amazing woman, and how awesome that she passed her wise words onto you for you to cherish forever! :)
Thank you for sharing your wonderful memories!
In His arms,

How amazing that your mom's diamond was there all those years just waiting to be found - kind of like the letters and heirlooms she gave you and the love between you which endures forever.
i loved the last picture - the colours are a perfect match!

What wonderful special memories! I was going through a box of old pictures a couple of days ago, looking for a baby picture of my son who is a senior (how did THAT happen???) and I found some old cards that Darrell had given me in our early years. What a special blessing to read his words of love! I'm happy you got the same gift!
I Love it! That was picture and your treasures were a perfect match. This was a very special story for you to share.
I lost my diamond one day too. But I found mine a few hours later, not a few YEARS! AMAZING!
What a beautiful memory! Your mom was very wise - and it brought tears to my eyes as I read your post. Thank you for sharing something so special! (And the first thing I noticed in the last picture was how well it all matched!)
